About PSN

The National Strategic Projects (Proyek Strategis Nasional/PSN) in Indonesia represent the government’s ambitious initiative to accelerate infrastructure development across the country. Launched as part of President Joko Widodo’s economic agenda, PSN encompasses various sectors, including transportation, energy, water resources, and digital infrastructure. The primary goal is to enhance connectivity, boost economic growth, and reduce regional disparities by ensuring that underdeveloped areas receive essential infrastructure support. The projects include toll roads, airports, dams, power plants, and even new capital city development, with significant involvement from state-owned enterprises and private investors.

Despite its grand vision, the implementation of PSN has encountered multiple challenges. Many projects suffer from land acquisition issues, environmental concerns, and financial bottlenecks. Additionally, some PSN developments have been criticized for favoring large-scale infrastructure that benefits corporate interests rather than addressing pressing social needs like affordable housing, health facilities, or rural development. Transparency and governance issues also pose concerns, as some projects have been linked to political interests and a lack of proper public consultation. The financing model, which heavily relies on debt, raises questions about long-term sustainability and fiscal risks.

A critical evaluation of PSN reveals the need for a more balanced and inclusive approach. While large-scale infrastructure is essential for economic expansion, the government should also ensure that these projects align with long-term social and environmental priorities. Strengthening regulatory frameworks, ensuring fair land compensation, and incorporating community participation can help mitigate some of the existing problems. Moreover, instead of prioritizing quantity over quality, a more selective approach that emphasizes projects with high social impact and economic feasibility would enhance the overall effectiveness of PSN. If not properly managed, PSN could exacerbate inequality rather than bridge developmental gaps in Indonesia.

About Map

This interactive map presents data and insights on various National Strategic Projects (PSN) initiated and executed under President Joko Widodo’s administration (2014–2024). The map covers binding regulations, infrastructure types, priority projects (project names), as well as project locations and implementing agencies. All data featured in this map are sourced from secondary materials, including reports from the Committee for Acceleration of Priority Infrastructure Delivery (KPPIP), media coverage, civil society organizations, and research/monitoring reports from institutions tracking PSN implementation on the ground. This database serves as a public-accessible resource for research, advocacy, and evaluation. The dataset will be regularly updated to reflect government policy plans under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration (2025–2029), as outlined in Presidential Regulation No. 12 of 2025 on the National Medium-Term Development Plan 2025–2029, which includes 77 PSN projects.

As of July 2024, 95 National Strategic Projects (PSN) have been fully operational, accounting for 40.8% of the 233 projects launched since the beginning of President Joko Widodo’s administration. Once all 233 projects are fully operational, Indonesia is projected to attract investments of up to IDR 6,246 trillion and generate approximately 2.71 million jobs. (For reference, as of August 2024, Indonesia’s unemployment rate stands at 7,465,599 people.)

PSN Monitor serves as a powerful tool for activists and academics seeking to analyze, critique, and advocate for more transparent and inclusive infrastructure development in Indonesia. Activists can use this map to monitor project implementation, highlight potential social and environmental impacts, and push for greater public accountability in PSN execution. Meanwhile, researchers and academics can leverage the data for policy evaluation, impact assessments, and socio-economic studies related to infrastructure development. By providing open access to comprehensive, regularly updated data, this map enables evidence-based discussions, strengthens civil society engagement, and fosters more informed policymaking. Ultimately, it encourages a data-driven approach to assessing PSN’s long-term effects on economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability.
